Geological Guide to Corton, Suffolk

(Boulder clay) - 2000

During the second ice-advance in the Pliocene age gave rise to the Lower Chalky Boulder clay, of a Jurassic type being deposited during the ice age. This clay rests on the Corton beds and contains fossils including various types of ammonites, bones and shells. Because it is deposited, you can find a huge variation. It is a shame that Corton was protected by the sea because fossils are quite rare and only after intense rainfall and land slippage, may you have a chance of finding anything.

(Chalk within the boulder clay) - 2000

From 2001, 2002, the damaged sea defence has been removed at the sea wall end, this has caused the sea to expose the forest bed. This will be a temporary and short sighting, before the sea defence was build at Corton, the Forest bed was well exposed with the bone bearing lower beds often exposed during scouring. The photo below shows the Forest Bed (which is currently wired off while they prepare to re-build the damaged high seawall.
